Joule Heating in Neutron Stars under Strong Gravitation
نویسنده
چکیده
Considering Joule heating caused by the dissipation of the magnetic field in the neutron star crust to be an efficient mechanism in maintaining a relatively high surface temperature in very old neutron stars, the role of general relativity is investigated. It is found that, although the effect of space-time curvature produced by the intense gravitational field of the star slows down the decay rate of the magnetic field, modification of the initial magnetic field configuration and the initial field strength by the space-time curvature results in increasing the rate of Joule heating. Hence the space-time curvature supports Joule heating in maintaining a relatively high surface temperature which is consistent with the observational detection. Neutron star long term cooling - Joule heating in magnetized neutron stars
We present two-dimensional simulations for the cooling of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields (B ≥ 1013 G). We study how the cooling curves are influenced by magnetic field decay. We show that the Joule heating effects are very large and in some cases control the thermal evolution. We characterize the temperature anisotropy induced by the magnetic field and predict the surface temperature...
متن کامل2D Cooling of Magnetized Neutron Stars
Context. Many thermally emitting, isolated neutron stars have magnetic fields that are larger than 1013 G. A realistic cooling model that includes the presence of high magnetic fields should be reconsidered. Aims. We investigate the effects of an anisotropic temperature distribution and Joule heating on the cooling of magnetized neutron stars. Methods. The 2D heat transfer equation with anisotr...
متن کاملMagneto–thermal evolution of neutron stars
Context. The presence of magnetic fields in the crust of neutron stars causes a non-spherically symmetric temperature distribution. The strong temperature dependence of the magnetic diffusivity and thermal conductivity, together with the heat generated by magnetic dissipation, couple the magnetic and thermal evolution of NSs, that cannot be formulated as separated one–dimensional problems. Aims...
متن کاملConstraints on the Steady-state R-mode Amplitude in Neutron Star Transients
Recent observations suggest that neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries rotate within a narrow range of spin frequencies clustered around 300Hz. A proposed explanation for this remarkable fact is that gravitational radiation from a steady-state r-mode oscillation in the neutron star’s core halts the spin-up due to accretion. For the neutron star transients, balancing the time-averaged accreti...
متن کاملOn Rapidly Rotating Magnetic Core-Collapse Supernovae
We have analyzed the magnetic effects that may occur in rapidly rotating core collapse supernovae. We consider effects from both magnetic turbulence and the formation of magnetic bubbles. For magnetic turbulence we have made a perturbative analysis for our spherically symmetric core-collapse supernova model that incorporates the build up of magnetic field energy in the matter accreting onto the...
